The National Association of New Zealand Quilters is excited to announce Cynthia Corbin as the tutor for Masterclass April 2010. Cynthia, a respected art quilter who describes herself as a “textile artist and quiltmaker”, will be tutoring her five day class “Flying Free” at three New Zealand venues. Cynthia will be known to many New Zealand quilters who saw the stunning exhibition “Speaking in Cloth: Six Quilters, Six Voices” which toured New Zealand in 2007. Her quilts are pieced from fabric which she dyes and paints herself. She works freehand in cutting and designing and uses machine quilting to complement the fabrics and intention of the quilt.
Cynthia’s class “Flying Free – More Seat of the Pants Composition and Construction” encompasses the tried and true approach that she uses in her own work. She is constantly adding new and interesting study exercises to her class. Her own work changes and grows by following what she is curious about and she reflects this in her classes. Cynthia will tailor this class to suit students who are eager for challenges and who are adept at quiltmaking, and she will give each student the tools to develop their own voice.
All levels, comfortable with sewing machine:
Challenge yourself! This class is an in-depth exploration of a direct and freehand approach to composition and construction. Each day we focus on a new series of abstract studies, considering for inspiration everything from traditional quilt blocks to primitive human figures. We consider complex fields, complex forms, and the structure of a composition – in a direct, experiential process. We explore, analyse, and refine to achieve work that is satisfying and fresh.
The lower North Island venue is Nga Tawa School, Marton, 5-10 April 2010 (Easter and school holidays). The South Island venue is Blue Skies, Kaiapoi, Christchurch, 13-18 April 2010. The upper North Island venue is Vaughan Park, North Shore City, Auckland, 20-25 April 2010.
The actual cost of the Masterclass is yet to be finalized but is expected to be in the region of $1500. This includes all meals, five nights’ accommodation, and the tutor’s fee. It compares favourably with the all inclusive cost of attending a national symposium. NANZQ will be applying to Creative NZ for a grant but there is no guarantee that such an application would be successful. If it was, the money would be shared equally between the eligible attendees. We will provide information to encourage participants to apply for local grants/bursaries to support their attendance.
